Parking suspension for removal vans, council by council

If there are marked bays or yellow lines outside either address, book a parking bay suspension or a dispensation before moving day. At the time of writing (September 2026) fees run from under £10 to about £70 a day, plus an admin fee in some boroughs, and notice from two working days to two weeks.

What is a parking suspension, and what is a dispensation?

A removal van needs to stand as close to the front door as it can, for several hours, often in a street where every space is a residents’ bay or a yellow line. Councils sell two ways round that.

  • A parking bay suspension closes one or more marked bays for the day. The council puts up signs in advance, and anyone left in the bay can be ticketed or moved, so the space is there when the van arrives.
  • A parking dispensation gives one named vehicle permission to wait on a yellow line, or in a bay, for the day. Nothing is reserved, but the van is legal where it stands.

For a single van a dispensation is usually the cheaper and quicker route, where the council offers one for removals. A suspension is the better choice when the street is busy and there is nowhere legal to stop without clearing a bay first, or when two vans need to stand end to end.

When do you need one?

Only when the van cannot park legally outside. A drive, an unrestricted kerb or a quiet side street outside a controlled parking zone needs nothing from the council. If either address is inside a controlled parking zone (CPZ), check the times on the zone sign: many zones only run for part of the day, and a move can sometimes fit outside those hours. Check both addresses, not just the one you are leaving.

Parking suspension fees and notice by council

All figures are from each council’s own website and are correct at the time of writing (September 2026). Councils change their fees every April, so check the council page before you pay.

Barnet (Edgware, Barnet, Finchley)

Barnet lists “removals” as a reason for a bay suspension, which costs £69.63 per 5 metre bay per day plus a £171.39 non-refundable admin fee, with at least seven calendar days notice. The dispensation, with “moving home” given as an example reason, is £51.90 per vehicle per day with two working days notice. For one van that fits on a yellow line, the dispensation is the cheaper route by some way. Both go through MiPermit, and the rules are on Barnet’s suspensions and dispensations page. Zones are not borough-wide, so check your road on the council’s CPZ map. More local detail on our Edgware, Barnet and Finchley pages.

Brent (Kingsbury, Wembley)

Brent lists home removals as a reason for a suspension. At the time of writing it is £67 per bay per day if you apply 14 or more days ahead, and a one-off £133 fee is added if you apply later. Changing a booking costs £30 and cancelling costs £101, and the council page asks for at least seven working days in any case. A dispensation lets a vehicle wait on a yellow line for up to four hours: £38 on a single yellow, £73 on a double yellow, per vehicle per day, with £31 extra under three days notice. Details are on Brent’s suspensions and dispensations page, and the CPZ map covers its 44 zones.

Wembley has one extra trap. On stadium event days the event day zone is permit only, and unpermitted vehicles are ticketed or removed. The council page does not say a suspension exempts you, so check the event calendar before you fix a date. See our Kingsbury and Wembley pages.

Harrow

Harrow prices the bay by area: £37 per day in Central, £23 in District and £11.50 in Local zones. On top is an admin fee of £60 with more than ten working days notice, £120 at three to ten days and £178 under three days, and the council can take up to ten working days to process it. You apply by emailing the form to pbs@harrow.gov.uk. A dispensation for a single yellow line in a CPZ, with removals listed, is £8.50 to £39 per day by area. See Harrow’s suspensions and dispensations page, the CPZ lookup and our Harrow page.

Hillingdon (Ruislip, Eastcote, Ickenham)

Hillingdon lists “domestic or office removals” and charges £48.50 per space per day, with the same fee again to cancel or amend within seven days. Notice is five working days for pay and display and loading bays, and seven working days for permit, shared use, business and disabled bays. It is an online form only, paid when you apply. The charges page sets it out. We did not find a dispensation product on Hillingdon’s pages. Most of the Metroland grid round Ruislip is uncontrolled, so many moves here need nothing at all. See our Ruislip page.

Watford

Watford Borough Council offers a dispensation with “removals or loading/unloading” listed, at £25 per vehicle per day, non-refundable, with three working days to process. The bay suspension is also £25 per 5.25 metres per day, but needs ten working days and is listed for skips and works, so for a house move the dispensation is the one to book. Both go through PaySmarti, and the rules are on Watford’s suspensions and dispensations page. Zones are common across the centre, both stations, Nascot, West Watford and Oxhey. See our Watford page.

Elsewhere in Hertfordshire

Parking is run by each district. Hertsmere (Borehamwood, Elstree, Radlett, Bushey, Potters Bar) sells a commercial dispensation at £20 per day or £40 per week with 48 working hours notice, and prices suspensions on application. Three Rivers (Rickmansworth, Croxley Green, Chorleywood) charges £35.50 per bay per day for a suspension or dispensation, with ten days notice, and lists “to move house” as a reason. We could not confirm the current St Albans and Dacorum figures, so check with those councils directly. Our Hertfordshire page covers the rest.

Camden (Hampstead)

Camden is almost entirely controlled parking, so a suspension is the norm for a Hampstead move. We could not confirm Camden’s current fees and notice period from the council’s site at the time of writing, so we have not printed them. Check the parking bay suspensions page before you book, and allow plenty of notice. See our Hampstead page.

What happens if you skip the suspension?

The van parks wherever it legally can, which may be at the end of the road. Every box, wardrobe and sofa then travels that distance on foot, so the day takes longer and costs more if you are paying by the hour. If the van stops on a bay or a line anyway, a civil enforcement officer can issue a penalty charge notice, and on a Wembley event day it can be removed. Booking late is the other cost: Brent and Harrow both charge more for short notice, so the permit is cheapest when it is booked early. Our removals cost guide shows where parking sits in the overall budget, and the moving house checklist puts the booking one month before moving day.

Sal checks the parking during the survey

Parking is part of every free survey. We look at both streets, where a van can stand, whether there is a zone, a yellow line or a drive, and how far the carry is. You get a clear answer on which permit each address needs, which council to apply to and by when, and any council fee is listed separately on the written quote. That applies to a full house removal, a man and van job or an office move.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a parking suspension for a removal van?

Only if the van cannot stand legally outside your door. A drive, a free side street or an unrestricted kerb needs nothing from the council. If the only space is a residents' bay, a pay and display bay or a yellow line, you need a suspension or a dispensation for moving day, or you risk a ticket.

  • What is the difference between a parking suspension and a dispensation?

A suspension closes one or more marked bays for the day, with council signs, so nobody else can park there. A dispensation is permission for one named vehicle to wait on a yellow line or in a bay. For a single van the dispensation is usually cheaper, where the council offers one for removals.

  • How much does a parking suspension cost in Barnet?

At the time of writing (September 2026), Barnet Council charges £69.63 per 5 metre bay per day plus a £171.39 non-refundable admin fee, with at least seven calendar days notice. A dispensation for one van is £51.90 per vehicle per day with two working days notice. Both are booked through MiPermit.

  • How much notice do councils need for a removals suspension?

At the time of writing: Barnet seven calendar days, Brent 14 days to avoid the late fee, Harrow more than ten working days for the lowest admin fee, Hillingdon five or seven working days by bay type, and Watford ten working days. Book as soon as your moving date is firm.

  • What happens if the removal van parks without a suspension?

The van can be given a penalty charge notice by a civil enforcement officer, and on Wembley event days unpermitted vehicles can be ticketed or removed. Without a reserved space the van may also have to park further away, which means a longer carry and a longer, dearer day.

  • Does the removal company book the parking suspension?

We check parking at both addresses during the free survey and tell you exactly which permit each street needs, which council to apply to and by when. Any suspension cost is listed separately on your written quote, so you can see what the council charges and what the move costs.
