Barnet’s housing is varied enough that no two moves are set up the same way. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces off the High Street and Wood Street have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wardrobes and bed frames come apart before they move and go back together at the other end. The 1930s semis that cover most of New Barnet and East Barnet have drives, which means the van parks off the road and nobody needs a permit. The larger detached houses in Arkley and Hadley take a bigger crew and often two vans. The new-build flats by High Barnet and New Barnet stations usually come with a lift booking and a loading bay that the block’s management has to release for you, and we ask about both at the survey.

Parking a removal van in Barnet

Barnet Council runs parking here. Controlled parking zones cluster round High Barnet tube, the High Street and New Barnet station, while East Barnet and Arkley are largely uncontrolled. You can check any road on the council’s CPZ map. If there are marked bays or yellow lines outside your door, the council sells two things, and the difference is worth knowing:

• A parking bay suspension, with “removals” a listed reason, costs £69.63 per bay per day plus a £171.39 non-refundable admin fee, and needs at least seven calendar days notice.
• A parking dispensation lets one named vehicle stand on a yellow line for the day, with “moving home” given as an example reason. It costs £51.90 per vehicle per day and needs two working days notice.

Both are applied for through MiPermit. For a single van the dispensation is the cheaper route by some distance, and it is the one we usually suggest. Those are the council’s 2026/27 fees at the time of writing; they change every April, so check the suspensions and dispensations page before you pay.

What a Barnet move looks like

A two-bed terrace off Wood Street. Typically two movers and one Luton van. The furniture is wrapped in the house, the beds and any flat-pack come apart, and the whole load fits in one van. A dispensation covers the van on the yellow line outside for the day. From £699.

A three-bed semi in East Barnet. A typical crew is three movers and two Lutons. With a drive there is nothing to book with the council. If you want the kitchen and the fragile things packed the day before, full packing for a three-bed is from £399, and the move itself is from £999.

A flat by New Barnet station going into storage. Completion dates that do not line up are normal in a chain. We load the flat, hold everything in storage (from £20 + VAT a week per container) and deliver when the keys are ready.

Clearing what you are not taking

If there is furniture you do not want at the new address, we can clear it on the same visit rather than leave you with a second job. A single room, garage or loft is from £149, and a whole three-bed house is from £749. We are a registered waste carrier and take what we clear to a licensed transfer station.

If you would rather take it yourself, Barnet’s Summers Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre in North Finchley (N12 0RF, about three miles south of the High Street) is open daily from 9am to 4pm, with the gates closing at 3.45pm. A van has to be booked 24 hours ahead at vanbookings.co.uk with proof of residency, you get six van visits a year, and the site does not take trade waste.
