How does parking for a removal van work in Watford?

Watford is not a London borough, and its parking rules are nothing like Barnet’s or Harrow’s. Parking, permits and bins are run by Watford Borough Council; the roads themselves and the recycling centres are Hertfordshire County Council’s.

Controlled parking zones are very common in Watford. Lettered zones cover the town centre, the streets round Watford Junction and Watford High Street stations, Nascot, West Watford and Oxhey, and some run every day from 8am to 10pm. The council keeps a directory of its controlled parking zones if you want to check your own street.

Where the van cannot park legally outside, there are two routes, both on the council’s parking suspensions and dispensations page:

• A parking dispensation. “Removals or loading/unloading” is listed as a reason. It costs £25 per vehicle per day, is non-refundable and takes 3 working days to process, at the time of writing. This is the route we use for almost every Watford move.
• A bay suspension. £25 per 5.25 m of bay per day with 10 working days to process, and listed for skips and works rather than removals. We only go this way if a dispensation will not cover the street.

Cassiobury, Nascot and Oxhey. 1930s semis with a drive at the front and a loft that has usually been filled over the years. The drive often means no permit is needed at all, and a three-bed semi is typically three movers and two Lutons over one day.

The new flats round Watford Junction and Clarendon Road. Lifts and managed access, so we book the lift and the loading slot with the building before the day, and time the van to fit the zone rules outside.

What a typical Watford move looks like

A two-bed terrace in West Watford, moving to a flat in North London. The dispensation goes in at least 3 working days ahead. Two movers and one Luton, which is what a two-bed usually fits in. Beds and wardrobes are taken apart upstairs, everything is loaded by late morning, and it is unloaded and rebuilt at the new address the same afternoon.
