Most of Ruislip was built between the wars, and it shows in how a move goes. The wide avenues of 1920s and 1930s semis and chalet bungalows almost all have a drive, so the van pulls in off the road and there is nothing to book with the council. Chalet bungalows have the awkward bit upstairs: dormer bedrooms with low headroom and a narrow stair, so beds and wardrobes come apart before they move. Ruislip Manor and South Ruislip have more terraced interwar stock, tighter on the road but still mostly uncontrolled. Ickenham’s larger detached houses take a bigger crew and, more often than not, two vans.

Parking a removal van in Ruislip

Hillingdon Council calls its controlled zones “parking management schemes”, and they are patchy: near the stations and the shopping parades in Ruislip, Eastcote and Ickenham, with most of the residential grid free. The council publishes a map of the schemes, which is the quickest way to check your road.

If there are marked bays outside and the van has to sit in one, Hillingdon sells a parking bay suspension, with “domestic or office removals” as a listed reason. At the time of writing it costs £48.50 per space per day, paid on application, and the same fee applies again if you cancel or amend within seven days of the date. Notice is five working days for pay and display and loading bays, and seven working days for permit, shared use, business and disabled bays. It is an online form only, and the charges page has the current figures, which change every April. Hillingdon’s site lists no cheaper single-vehicle dispensation for yellow lines, so on a road with bays the suspension is the only product we could find. Tell us at the survey and we will say whether your road needs one at all; most do not.

Clearing what stays behind

Anything you are not taking can be cleared on the same visit, from £149 for a single room, garage or loft and from £749 for a whole three-bed house. We are a registered waste carrier, so it goes to a licensed transfer station. If you would rather do the tip runs yourself, Hillingdon’s Harefield Civic Amenity Site on New Years Green Lane (UB9 6LX) is open daily from 8am to 4pm with no booking for cars. A van needs two forms of ID, is limited to 12 visits a year, and the site is for Hillingdon residents only. Expect a queue at peak times.
