Passport address change when you move

Your passport is not tied to your address, so you never have to update it when you move house. What you do need to update, and quickly, is your driving licence, the electoral roll and your Royal Mail redirection.

The short answer

A UK passport does not show your address, so a house move does not require a new one.

What you actually need to change

  1. Driving licence (our guide). Free and done online in a few minutes at gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence.
  2. Electoral roll (our guide). Register at your new address with your local council, or via gov.uk/register-to-vote.
  3. Royal Mail redirection (our guide). Set one up before moving day so post keeps reaching you: royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redirection.

Council tax, your GP, the TV licence, banks and utilities also need your new address. The moving house checklist lists each one with the official link and when to do it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to update my passport when I move house?

No. A UK passport does not carry your address, so moving house has no effect on it. You only need a new passport if it is expiring, damaged, or your name changes.

  • What do I actually need to update after moving?

Your driving licence (free, online, DVLA), the electoral roll (free, online, your local council), and a Royal Mail redirection so post sent to your old address still reaches you.
